THINGS ALL RETAIL WORKERS KNOW

Wednesday, 9 August 2017

Hello!!! I'm now in Italy for the next week, so I'll be quite quiet when it comes to social media. If you want to find any of my social media, so you can keep up to date with everything Bonjour Ashleigh, there are links for everything in my social media tab.

Today I thought I'd write a post on things all retail workers know. As I (and what feels like every other student in the universe know) is how terrible working in retail can be, and how customers don't always make life easy for you.

I have worked in retail since I was 16, so for the past three years, and while I'm not a massive fan of it, I have met so many good friends as a result of it! It can be soul-destroying and occasionally when a customer is being mean to me I don't see how this is worth it, but I've made so many good friends for life and most of the time I do love it! There's something so fun about making someone happy, whether you just have a chat with a customer, or help a customer find a product they were looking for. It can be extremely stressful but also can be so rewarding.

People can be horrible. That's just a fact, but a fact that we who work in retail know well. People can be rude, people can shout at you, people can upset you and make you feel rubbish. I'm not even going to discuss some of the absolute horror stories that have happened to me in work. Retail really makes you grow a thick skin.

It is always tiring. There has never been a shift that I've left where I'm not tired out. Running after customers all day is tiring, and lifting boxes is tiring, working on the tills is tiring, being in the fitting rooms is tiring. Every shift, I have been tired as working in retail requires you to give 100% all day.

People can also be lovely. In relation to my point about horrible people, you will always get some people who are so lovely and kind and make your day. I've had customers walk up to me and be the nicest human beings you could ever wish to meet.

You really have a chance to impact peoples' day. I once served a woman who told my manager I had made her day and I was so lovely. This made me so happy, and no doubt made her happy. When it's all getting too difficult for me, I remind myself of this lovely comment, and I keep going. In the words of Dory "when life gets tough, just keep swimming".

Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with retail, it requires so much patience but it so fulfilling. I can't say it's the best job in the world as I am so excited to start working in marketing, but it's okay as jobs go. I love the people I work with, which honestly makes a job, and the majority of customers we get are nice enough!

Have you ever worked in retail? What do/did you not like about it?

Thanks for reading! Ashleigh♡xoxo
